Established on June 19th, 1985 as the largest public wholesale market in Korea, Garak Market has led the development of the distribution of Korean agricultural and marine products, growing its quality and quantity significantly. The trade volume of Garak Market is over 2.3 million tons yearly (7.5 thousand tons daily), which is the largest trade volume in the world. Also, it is the distribution center of Korean agricultural and marine products as it handles up to 49% of the needs of Seoul City and 40% of the total trade volume of 32 national public wholesale markets in Korea.

It currently has two distribution systems, having introduced a consignment system for the first time in Korea along with its auction system.
